Portraiture or portrait photography is one of the oldest types of photography. This type of photography has been used ever since after the camera was invented. It was the cheapest and most simple method at that time and mostly politicians or wealthy people hired photographers instead of sitting still for a portrait painting. Amongst the other style of photography, portrait photography requires subjects who aren’t used to posing in front of the camera. From that, it is the sole reason why it is called portrait photography, because it focuses on the stillness of the features of the subject. Usually it’s a half body method that captures the face of its subjects. It may be spontaneous but on the earlier years of portrait photography it was a focus that the model should face the camera. But later it became a term for capturing emotions of the face, it was vastly used by the lot who want their pictures kept only for personal purposes.

In this generation, most people tend to call it head shot, because its main focus is the face. In all actuality, you could take a portrait in whole body as long as the focus is on the facial expression. When you say portrait photography, you don’t really need to be all stiff and proper. It’s simply subjects the face into a darker shade and only a portion of the face is reflected by light. This is more used by authors for their books to create an artistic and mysterious feel.

When you take portrait photo’s any lens will do but it’s more appropriate to use medium telephoto lenses that are classically fast. You could compair these lenses:
